Overview

The KPG (Kratiko Pistopoiitiko Glossomatheias) is the Greek state certificate of foreign language proficiency. It was developed for the five most popular foreign languages in Greece (English, French, German, Italian and Spanish), and exams in Turkish are also announced for 2026. Successful candidates are certified at one of six levels, A1 to C2.

Levels or stages

Exams combine two levels in one graded paper: A1 and A2, B1 and B2, and C1 and C2. In the Greek system the levels are described as B1 "moderate", B2 "good", C1 "very good" and C2 "excellent".

Exam pattern

Every level has four modules, common to all languages.

ModuleContent
1Reading comprehension and language awareness
2Writing and written mediation
3Listening comprehension
4Speaking and oral mediation

From B1 upward, candidates also act as mediators, taking information from a Greek text and passing it on in the target language. Modules 1 to 3 are taken one after another with short breaks. Speaking is held on a separate day, in pairs, lasting 15 to 30 minutes in total depending on the level, with about 7 to 15 minutes per candidate.

Marking and results

The maximum score is 100 and the pass mark is 60, as set by law. You need at least 30 percent of the available marks in each of Modules 1 to 3 for a total to be calculated. Module 2 carries 5 marks more and Module 4 five fewer than an equal split. Multiple-choice answers are read electronically; short answers, writing scripts and speaking are marked by trained evaluators, and each script is assessed by two markers.

Important dates

The second exam period of 2026 will be held on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November 2026, for B1+B2 and C1+C2 in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Turkish. Online applications run from 5 October to 13 October 2026 (until 23:59).

Fees

For the November 2026 exams the fee is 80 euros for B1+B2 and 100 euros for C1+C2, paid through a public e-paravolo issued via the GSIS system or a citizen service centre (KEP), before the application deadline.

How to apply

  1. Issue and pay the e-paravolo for your level and language by the deadline.

  2. Submit the online application with the required documents, as listed in the ministry announcement.

Preparation tips

  • Use the sample papers and answer keys on the KPG website to check that your level is adequate.

  • Practise mediation tasks from B1 upward.

Is KPG the same as the Certificate of Attainment in Greek?

No. KPG certifies foreign languages in Greece. The Certificate of Attainment in Greek certifies Greek as a foreign language.
