Overview

ESOL Skills for Life qualifications are English language qualifications for multilingual learners aged above 16 who live, study or work, or are preparing to work, in the UK. They were accredited by Ofqual in 2014 and are offered by several awarding organisations, including Pearson and the English Speaking Board (ESB).

Levels or stages

Qualifications run at Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. ESB also offers an unregulated Pre-Entry award in speaking and listening for learners with very little English literacy.

Exam pattern

At each level there are three components, each assessed as one unit.

ComponentPearson formatESB format
ReadingPaper-based testExam paper marked by external markers
WritingPaper-based testExam paper marked by external markers
Speaking and listeningTask-based testOral assessment by an external assessor

With Pearson, the centre marks the assessments and Pearson verifies a sample; the only assessment is the one set by Pearson, with no portfolio. Time limits are nominal and vary by module and level, so check the specification for your level.

Marking and results

You can enter for single-skill Awards or the full Certificate, which needs all three units (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening). ESB grades each component Pass or Unsuccessful.

Fees

Fees are set by the awarding organisation and your centre. As an example, ESB lists per-learner fees of 15 pounds each for the Entry 1 reading and writing awards and 42 pounds for Entry 1 speaking and listening; check the current price list.

How to apply

Enrol through an approved college or training provider, which chooses the awarding organisation and arranges entry.

Preparation tips

  • Use the practice papers your awarding organisation publishes.

  • Prepare all three components, since the Certificate needs every one.

Is this the same as a visa English test?

These are regulated learning qualifications. The sources reviewed do not cover visa use, so check the Home Office requirements for your route.
