Overview

RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) is the recruitment of clerical, ministerial and supervisory posts in Indian Railways — such as Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk at Undergraduate level, and Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Senior Clerk cum Typist and Junior Accountant Assistant cum Typist at Graduate level — conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). The most recent cycle covered by a Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) is CEN 05/2024 for Graduate-level NTPC posts (a separate CEN covers Undergraduate-level posts); recruitment is run through 20 zonal RRBs, each administering the CBT for candidates assigned to it. Because the official RRB and rrbapply.gov.in sites could not be reached directly for this review, cycle-specific facts below are drawn from secondary reporting on the CEN and should be re-confirmed against the live CEN document.

Who can apply

Age limits and educational qualification differ by post and level: Undergraduate-level NTPC posts generally require a 12th-pass qualification, while Graduate-level posts require a bachelor's degree. Exact age bands, relaxations and qualification details are set out in the specific CEN for the cycle and can change between cycles, so candidates should check the current CEN published by their zonal RRB or on rrbapply.gov.in.

Exam pattern

RRB NTPC recruitment runs through two computer-based tests (CBT 1 and CBT 2), followed by a Typing Skill Test (for typist posts) or a Computer-Based Aptitude Test/CBAT (for posts such as Station Master and Traffic Assistant), then document verification and a medical examination. Per the CBT structure reported for the CEN 05/2024 (Graduate) cycle:

CBT 1

SubjectQuestionsMarks
General Awareness4040
Mathematics3030
General Intelligence & Reasoning3030
Total100100

Duration: 90 minutes.

CBT 2

SubjectQuestionsMarks
General Awareness5050
Mathematics3535
General Intelligence & Reasoning3535
Total120120

Duration: 90 minutes.

Both stages carry negative marking of 1/3 mark for each wrong answer, as is standard across RRB CBTs. Candidates shortlisted from CBT 1 and CBT 2 are called for a Typing Skill Test (typist posts) or CBAT (Station Master, Traffic Assistant and similar posts), depending on the post applied for, followed by document and medical verification.

Selection process

  1. CEN notification published by the zonal RRBs.

  2. Online application during the notified window on rrbapply.gov.in.

  3. CBT 1 (qualifying/screening stage) for all applicants.

  4. CBT 2 for candidates shortlisted from CBT 1.

  5. Typing Skill Test or CBAT, depending on the post, for candidates shortlisted from CBT 2.

  6. Document verification and medical examination.

  7. Final result and post allocation, published on the zonal RRB website.

How to apply

Applications for RRB NTPC are submitted online through rrbapply.gov.in during the window specified in the current CEN. Admit cards (e-call letters) and city intimation slips are issued only through the official RRB website for the zone the candidate applied under.

Preparation tips

Since RRB releases a fresh CEN with its own vacancy count, eligibility and exact stage-wise cut-offs for each NTPC cycle, always confirm the current cycle's structure — including which posts require a Typing Skill Test versus a CBAT — from the live CEN document before preparing. Because CBT 1 is a qualifying, normalised-score screening stage, most candidates find it more efficient to build broad accuracy across all three sections rather than over-specialise in one, since a low score in any single section can pull down the normalised total.

What is the difference between RRB NTPC CBT 1 and CBT 2?

CBT 1 is a common screening stage of 100 questions in 90 minutes; CBT 2 is a longer stage of 120 questions in 90 minutes taken only by candidates shortlisted from CBT 1, with a higher weightage on each subject.

Is there a typing test in RRB NTPC?

Yes, for typist posts such as Junior Clerk cum Typist and Senior Clerk cum Typist, candidates shortlisted from CBT 2 take a Computer-Based Typing Skill Test. Posts such as Station Master and Traffic Assistant instead require a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT).

What is the negative marking in RRB NTPC?

Both CBT 1 and CBT 2 deduct 1/3 mark for each wrong answer, in line with the standard RRB CBT marking scheme.

Does RRB NTPC cover graduate and non-graduate posts together?

NTPC posts span both Undergraduate-level (12th pass) and Graduate-level eligibility, notified through separate CENs — CEN 05/2024 covers Graduate-level posts. Check which CEN and post category applies before applying.

Where can I check the current RRB NTPC notification?

Check rrbapply.gov.in, the central RRB application portal, or the website of your preferred zonal RRB, for the live Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) covering NTPC recruitment.
