Overview
Quiero Ser Maestro is the process by which Ecuador's Ministry of Education selects teachers for permanent posts in public schools. It has two parts: a first phase in which aspirants earn the status of eligible candidate (candidato apto), and a contest of merits and opposition for specific vacancies. The Ministry runs the process with INEVAL, the national education evaluation institute.
The process has been run in numbered editions and for different specialities, so the details of each call (specialities, dates, vacancies) are set by the Ministry in that call.

Levels or stages
Phase 1: eligible candidate status
As described in 2022, an aspirant becomes a candidato apto by:
Registering in the module enabled by the Ministry.
Passing a personality test, run by the Ministry in laboratories across the country. It looks at soft and socio-emotional skills needed to protect children and teenagers.
Passing a reasoning and knowledge test run by INEVAL, open to those who passed the personality test.
In the 2022 call, the INEVAL test was online, taken in a single sitting, and used single-answer items with four options. Candidates had 3 hours 30 minutes. It has two components:
| Component | Content |
|---|---|
| Reasoning | Verbal, numerical and abstract |
| Knowledge | General knowledge (pedagogy and computational thinking) and specific knowledge in the chosen speciality, drawn from 31 disciplinary areas |
Before registering, aspirants must have the qualifications that the education law requires. In 2022 the Ministry said that if a degree is not in the education field, the aspirant cannot take part in the aptitude process.
Phase 2: merits and opposition
Those who hold the candidato apto status take part in the contest of merits and opposition for vacancies. As described in 2019, this phase includes a practical evaluation, an application stage in which candidates choose the schools they want to work at, appeals and final results. In the 2019 edition, candidates could choose from one to five schools and the system assigned the vacancy to the applicant with the highest score.
Who can apply
You need to meet the qualification requirement in the education law for the speciality you choose. Each call states the specialities and the conditions.
Important dates
Dates change with each call and edition. The Ministry publishes the schedule for registration, tests, applications to vacancies, appeals and appointment.
How to apply
Register through the Ministry of Education's enabled module for the current call and follow its notices for the personality test, the INEVAL test and the vacancy application stage.
After the exam
Winners of a vacancy receive an appointment (nombramiento), giving job stability and entry into the teaching career. In 2019 the schedule after the vacancy assignment included appeals, publication of final results, acceptance and delivery of the appointment.
Preparation tips
Check that your degree qualifies for the speciality before registering.
Prepare for the reasoning components (verbal, numerical, abstract) and for pedagogy, computational thinking and your own discipline.
