Overview

The POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) is a written test of reading and writing ability used to screen people applying to become peace officers in California. It was developed by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), and is given by individual law enforcement agencies using trained proctors. It measures skills linked to success as a California peace officer.

Who can apply

You take the PELLETB through an agency that offers it, usually as part of applying for an entry-level officer or trainee job. Each agency sets its own entry rules. For example, the City of Bakersfield required candidates to be at least 20 years and 6 months old when they sat the test, and asked them to register online before choosing a test slot.

Exam pattern

The PELLETB is a multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank written test with five sections:

  • Spelling

  • Vocabulary

  • Clarity (clear, correct writing)

  • Reading comprehension

  • CLOZE (filling gaps in a passage using context clues)

Agencies that have published their arrangements, such as Bakersfield, allow 2 hours 30 minutes for the whole test.

Marking and results

Your raw score (the number of correct answers) is converted to a T-score, a standard score that shows how you did compared with other test takers on a bell-shaped curve. On this scale 50 is average, and scores from 40 to 60 fall within the average range. T-scores are calibrated to the sample used in the test's original validation study.

POST does not set a single pass mark. Each hiring agency chooses its own minimum T-score; for example, Bakersfield required a T-score of 48 or higher for its Police Trainee posts.

How to apply

Find a California law enforcement agency that is testing, and register through it. Many agencies take online registration and then let accepted candidates book a test date, often with limited seats per session.

Under POST rules you can take the PELLETB only once in any 30-day period, no matter which agency gives it.

After the exam

The agency uses your T-score to decide whether you move on in its hiring process. The later stages are set by each agency.

Preparation tips

POST publishes an applicant preparation guide that includes a practice test. Work through it under timed conditions. Since three of the five sections cover spelling, vocabulary and clarity, regular reading and careful proofreading help, and for the CLOZE section practise using the surrounding sentence to work out the missing word.

What is a good PELLETB score?

The PELLETB uses T-scores, where 50 is average and 40 to 60 is the average range. Each agency sets its own minimum, so check the cut-off for the department you are applying to.

How often can I retake the PELLETB?

Once every 30 days at most, across all agencies.

Is the PELLETB the same as the job application?

No. Agencies treat PELLETB registration and the job application separately, and a passing T-score only lets you move to the next hiring step.
