Overview
New South Wales Police Force officers are recruited through a combined education and selection pathway rather than a single exam. Applicants enrol in an associate degree delivered in partnership with the NSW Police Force, and move from study into paid work as a Probationary Constable. This page describes the pathway as set out by Western Sydney University for its Associate Degree in Applied Policing (ADAP). The NSW Police Force website could not be opened for this review, so confirm current requirements and intakes with NSW Police recruitment.

Who can apply
The ADAP is open to Australian citizens and Australian permanent residents.
Academic suitability: a Year 12 HSC with a minimum ATAR of 50, or an equivalent such as an AQF Certificate III or IV, a diploma, an advanced diploma, a bachelor's degree or higher, vocational experience, or a bridging or preparatory course.
Professional suitability is assessed only by the NSW Police Force. It covers matters such as physical health and ability, mental health and criminal record, and the Force sets the criteria and standards.
If you do not meet the academic entry requirements, the university may offer a place in its fee-free Undergraduate Preparation Program in Applied Policing (UPPAP). Completing it and meeting the Professional Suitability Assessment guarantees a place in the ADAP.
Levels or stages
The program runs for two years full time and is delivered in three stages.
Stage 1: Distance study
A 16-week stage of online study, a residential visit to the NSW Police Force Academy and a two-week placement at a police station.
Stage 2: Police Academy, Goulburn
A 16-week full-time residential stage at the Academy in Goulburn. Students must keep meeting the professional suitability requirements throughout. Finishing this stage makes them eligible to begin operational duties.
Stage 3: Operational stage
A 12-month period as a Probationary Constable at a NSW Police command, while completing three further 14-week part-time online sessions. After the probation period, officers are confirmed as Constables.
Important dates
Western Sydney University lists these ADAP start dates: 26 October 2026 (Term 4), 1 March 2027, 3 May 2027 and 23 August 2027. Applications do not go through UAC.
Fees
As listed on the university's page in 2026, the indicative domestic fee is A$9,112 per year, based on a normal full-time load. It is an estimate and the final amount depends on the subjects taken, timing and annual changes. Eligible students can defer the student contribution through HELP loans. The estimate excludes the Student Services and Amenities Fee.
How to apply
Apply to the ADAP through Western Sydney University's course page. The NSW Police Force alone assesses professional suitability. Contact the university's Student Services Hub if you are unsure whether you meet the academic requirement.
FAQs
Is there a written entrance exam?
The source for this page describes academic entry criteria and a professional suitability assessment run by the NSW Police Force, not a single entrance exam.
Can I join with a low ATAR?
Yes, possibly. The minimum ATAR is 50, and other qualifications or the preparation program can also open the way in.
