Overview
Sesjon is the assessment day the Norwegian Armed Forces (Forsvaret) use to decide who is called up for service. It is also the entry point to all education and jobs in Forsvaret. You are tested physically, theoretically and medically, and you talk with staff about your interests and motivation. According to Forsvaret, around half of those who attend are taken out for service or education.

Who can apply
Sesjon is not applied for. Who is called depends on the self-declaration (egenerklæringen), which is normally filled in once, in the year you turn 17. If your answers take you forward, you must attend sesjon. There is no exemption except for health problems so serious that travelling to the sesjon centre is impossible, which needs a doctor's statement. Sesjon is usually held in your last year of upper secondary school or apprenticeship. It is done only once in a lifetime, although in some cases a failed test can be retaken later.
Exam pattern
Sesjon has four parts and usually lasts about six hours.
| Part | What happens |
|---|---|
| Theory test | Three sections: calculations, figures and word similarity. You cannot practise for it. |
| Physical tests | Standing long jump, a seated 10 kg medicine ball throw, pull-ups on a bar, and a running test. |
| Health check | A doctor checks hearing, sight and colour vision, height and weight, heart and lungs, pulse and blood pressure, and back and bones. Part of it is done in underwear. |
| Interview | You describe what you want and what motivates you: first-time service or education. |
Marking and results
You get all your results on the day, including whether you will be called up for first-time service (førstegangstjeneste). Many services and educations have minimum requirements on the theory test.
How to apply
There is no application. You are sent a call-up about three to four weeks before the date. You must confirm it by logging in to Forsvaret's Min side, where you can also ask to change the date for a good reason. Everyone who attends must also answer health questions before arrival.
After the exam
There are two outcomes: you are told when and where to report for first-time service, or you are not called up. If you are found qualified, you are liable for conscription from the year you turn 19 to the end of the year you turn 44, even if you do not serve. First-time service can last 6 to 18 months, and afterwards you can expect annual training with the Home Guard (Heimevernet). If you pass, you can choose between first-time service and an education in Forsvaret.
Preparation tips
Sleep well beforehand, as the theory test can matter for later options. Try the physical tests in advance. Bring any medical certificates and your glasses prescription. Look into the options and make a ranked wish list for the interview.
Is sesjon voluntary?
No. If you are taken forward from the self-declaration, you must attend. Not turning up is a criminal offence.
Can I take sesjon again?
No, it is held once in a lifetime, though some who fail a single test may be allowed to retake it later.
When do I get the result?
On the same day, before you leave.
