Overview

The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) is the constitutional body that recruits into Maharashtra's state civil services and a wide range of other state government posts. Unlike a single annual exam, MPSC runs dozens of separate recruitment drives at once, each identified by its own advertisement number ("Advt. No.") — from the flagship State Services Examination (Rajyaseva) to posts such as Police Sub-Inspector, Assistant Professor across subjects, Maharashtra Gazetted Civil Services, Assistant Commissioner (Animal Husbandry), and Civil Judge/Judicial Magistrate. Each advertisement is tracked through its own cycle of exam, answer key, result and recommendation list on MPSC's website.

Selection process

MPSC's own notices describe a common recruitment procedure across most of its competitive exams: an objective, multiple-choice preliminary or main screening exam (increasingly computer-based, with mock tests available), followed — for posts that require it — by a descriptive Main Examination and/or an Interview, and finally document verification. The Commission has published a revised pattern and question-paper structure specifically for the State Services Main Examination, and separately for the Maharashtra Gazetted Civil Services Main Examination (descriptive-type papers). For uniformed posts such as Police Sub-Inspector, MPSC also applies revised physical test standards as an additional stage.

How to apply

Applications for MPSC exams are submitted online through the Commission's own application system, linked from mpsc.gov.in, against the specific advertisement number for the post. MPSC's site notes that candidates' certificates and documents can also be submitted through the DigiLocker system, and that candidate profiles go through a KYC process on the online application portal. Candidates who no longer wish to be considered for a particular recruitment can use MPSC's "opting out" procedure, as covered in a dedicated announcement on the site.

Preparation tips

Because MPSC runs many recruitment drives in parallel — some for the State Services Examination, others for specific departmental or judicial posts — always confirm which advertisement number and post you are tracking, and read that advertisement's own pattern and syllabus rather than assuming a fixed structure applies across all MPSC exams. MPSC has also revised syllabi and paper patterns for some exams (for example, the State Services Examination) through corrigenda published on its site, so check the latest circular before relying on an older syllabus.
