Overview
The National Defense Academy of Japan (防衛大学校, Boudai) trains future officers for Japan's Self-Defense Forces (Ground, Maritime and Air) through a four-year academy programme combining academic study with military training. Admission is through a competitive entrance examination, with separate tracks for general-recommendation and general (written-exam-first) applicants.

Who can apply
Applicants must be Japanese nationals who have graduated from, or are expected to graduate from, upper-secondary school (or hold an equivalent qualification), and generally be under 21 years of age as of 1 April of the enrolment year, meeting physical and medical fitness standards for officer training.
Exam pattern
The general (ippan) admission route has two stages: a first-stage written examination covering academic subjects, generally mathematics, Japanese (kokugo) and English, along with science and social studies depending on the course (riko or bunka) applied to; and a second-stage assessment for candidates who pass the first stage, covering an essay test, an interview, and a physical/medical examination. A separate recommendation-based (suisen) route uses school recommendation, academic record, and interview/essay assessment instead of the full written exam.
After the exam
Successful candidates enrol as cadets (gakusei) at the Academy, receiving a salary as Self-Defense officials during their four years of study, and after graduation generally proceed to a specific service's officer candidate school before commissioning.
Preparation tips
Because the first-stage written exam covers core academic subjects similar to Japan's general university entrance exams, candidates typically prepare using standard university-entrance-level study in mathematics, Japanese and English (plus science/social studies for their chosen course), while also preparing for the interview and essay stages that follow for those who clear the written stage.
What are the two main admission routes to the National Defense Academy?
A recommendation-based (suisen) route using school recommendation and interview/essay assessment, and a general (ippan) route centred on a two-stage written exam and interview process.
Do cadets receive a salary while studying at the National Defense Academy?
Yes, cadets are treated as Self-Defense officials and receive a salary during their four years at the Academy.
