Overview

Post-UTME is a screening that some Nigerian universities run after the JAMB UTME. The institution you chose sets its own requirements, so the details differ between schools. This page uses the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Abuja as examples. The Abuja example comes from a news report, which also says the university has been renamed Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja.

Who can apply

You need a UTME result that meets the institution's cut-off and its O'Level requirements. JAMB's 2026 policy meeting set national minimum tolerable admission scores of 150 for universities and colleges of nursing, and 100 for polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of agriculture and education, and innovation enterprise institutions. Institutions can ask for more.

  • UNILAG, as listed on its admissions notices page in 2026, requires five O'Level credits as the department needs, a minimum of 200 in the UTME, JAMB forwarding your details to the university, and the required minimum score in the university's Post-UTME. Candidates must be at least 16 by 30 September of the admission year.

  • The University of Abuja, for 2026/2027 according to a news report of its notice, required at least 180 in the 2026 UTME and at least five credit passes including English Language and Mathematics for UTME applicants. Direct Entry applicants needed a recognised qualification such as an NCE, ND, first degree or HND.

Exam pattern

The format depends on the institution. UNILAG's notices describe a Post-UTME examination with a required minimum score and a screening form completed on its portal. The Abuja report describes an online screening portal. Read your school's notice for its method.

Marking and results

Institutions combine your scores in their own way. For 2025/2026, UNILAG's notice sets these weights for assessing UTME candidates:

ComponentWeight
JAMB UTME50%
O'Level20%
Post-UTME30%

UNILAG converts O'Level grades to points: A1 is 10, B2 is 9, B3 is 8, C4 is 7, C5 is 6 and C6 is 5.

Important dates

Dates are set by each institution. As an example, the University of Abuja's 2026/2027 portal opened on 13 August 2026 and closed on 26 August 2026, according to a news report of its notice.

Fees

Check the institution's notice for the fee. At UNILAG, you generate a payment advice, pay at a bank or online, then complete the screening form.

How to apply

At UNILAG for 2025/2026: log in on the Admissions Post-UTME application page with your UTME application number as username and your surname in lowercase as password, generate and print payment advice, pay, return to the portal to complete the screening form, then print your Post-UTME examination pass. Make sure names match on all documents.

After the exam

UNILAG notes that it does not require payment to process admission and does not use agents.

Preparation tips

  • Check that JAMB has forwarded your details to the institution, as UNILAG requires.

  • Check the cut-off and O'Level requirements for your course, which can be above JAMB's national minimum.

  • Keep names consistent across your UTME, O'Level and screening documents.

Is there one national Post-UTME exam?

The sources reviewed describe institution-specific processes: UNILAG and the University of Abuja each state their own requirements, weights and cut-offs, so check the notice of the school you applied to.
