Overview

GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a national exam that tests a candidate's grasp of undergraduate-level subjects in engineering, technology, science, architecture and related fields. It is organised each year by one of the IITs or IISc on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, under the Ministry of Education; IIT Guwahati organised GATE 2026.

Who can apply

Eligibility depends on the qualifying degree and the specific paper a candidate wants to appear for, and is set out in detail on the official GATE eligibility page each year; candidates should verify their eligibility and required documents on the GOAPS application portal before applying, since qualifying in GATE does not by itself guarantee admission or a job.

Exam pattern

GATE 2026 offered 30 test papers spanning engineering, technology, science, architecture and humanities disciplines, including a new Energy Science sectional paper introduced within the Engineering Sciences (XE) paper. Candidates can appear for one paper, or for a permitted combination of two papers. The exam is conducted as a computer-based test (CBT).

Syllabus

Each of the 30 GATE papers has its own subject-wise syllabus, published separately on the official GATE website for the paper concerned.

Marking and results

GATE scores are valid for three years from the date the result is announced. Score computation involves normalisation across different sessions of the same paper.

Important dates

For GATE 2026: registration ran from 25 August to 13 October 2025 (including a late-fee window), admit cards were available from 2 to 13 January 2026, the exam was held over four days — 7, 8, 14 and 15 February 2026, in forenoon (9:30 am–12:30 pm) and afternoon (2:30 pm–5:30 pm) sessions — and results were announced on 19 March 2026.

Fees

For GATE 2026, the application fee (per paper, regular registration period) was ₹1,000 for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates and ₹2,000 for all other candidates; these rose to ₹1,500 and ₹2,500 respectively during the extended registration window with late fee. The fee doubles for candidates registering for two papers.

How to apply

Applications are submitted online through the GOAPS portal linked from the official GATE website for the year (goaps.iitg.ac.in for GATE 2026), where candidates fill in personal and academic details, upload documents, choose their paper(s) and exam city preferences, and pay the fee.

After the exam

A valid GATE score is used in two main ways: for admission to Master's and PhD programmes (often with government scholarships or assistantships) at IITs, NITs, IIITs and other Ministry of Education-supported institutes, typically through the Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan/M.Des (CCMT) process; and for direct recruitment by several Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), such as GAIL and NPCIL, that use GATE scores as part of their hiring process. A GATE score by itself does not guarantee either admission or a job offer.

Preparation tips

Because GATE tests undergraduate-level subject understanding rather than speed alone, working systematically through each paper's official syllabus, solving previous years' GATE question papers under timed conditions, and revising core undergraduate concepts (rather than only exam-specific shortcuts) tend to matter more than last-minute cramming.

Who conducts GATE each year?

An IIT or IISc is designated as the organising institute each year on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE; IIT Guwahati organised GATE 2026.

How long is a GATE score valid?

Three years from the date the result is announced.

Can I appear for more than one GATE paper?

Yes, but only for specific permitted two-paper combinations, and the application fee is doubled for a second paper.

Does a GATE score guarantee an M.Tech seat or a PSU job?

No. It makes a candidate eligible to apply through the relevant counselling process (such as CCMT) or PSU recruitment drive, but admission or selection still depends on the institute's or PSU's own criteria.
