Overview
EmSAT (the Emirates Standardized Test) is a national system of computer-based tests run by the UAE Ministry of Education, used across the country to measure student achievement and readiness in English, Arabic and core school subjects. The best-known tier, EmSAT Achieve, is taken by Grade 12 students and is the test UAE public and many private universities use for admission placement, replacing tests like IELTS or TOEFL for English-proficiency decisions. EmSAT also has an early-grades tier (EmSAT Baseline) and a tier for specific university majors that need deeper subject knowledge (EmSAT Advanced). Tests are delivered in Arabic or English depending on the subject, through test centres across the Emirates.
Note
The official EmSAT portal was not directly reachable while writing this page, so the details below are corroborated from multiple secondary sources (university admissions pages and EmSAT preparation guides) rather than read live from the Ministry of Education site. Confirm your own subjects, fees and dates on the official EmSAT portal before registering.

Who can apply
EmSAT Achieve is primarily for Grade 12 students in the UAE, including those in both public and private schools following the MOE curriculum, and is a requirement for university admission in the country. Students sit it as part of completing Grade 12 and again, if needed, to meet a particular university's entry score. Private candidates who are not currently enrolled in an MOE-curriculum school, including returning students or those applying to a UAE university from abroad, can also register and sit the test for a fee. Registration is done through the official EmSAT portal using a UAE PASS account, which is activated with an Emirates ID.
Levels or stages
EmSAT Baseline
A diagnostic tier for Grade 1 students that measures early literacy and numeracy skills. It is used by schools and the Ministry to track foundational skills rather than for university admission.
EmSAT Achieve
The Grade 12 tier, and the one most students mean by "EmSAT." English, Arabic, Math and Physics are the subjects every student on the MOE curriculum needs to complete to be issued a Grade 12 certificate. Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science are additional subjects students can take depending on their intended major, since universities may ask for a specific subject score alongside English and Math for certain programmes (such as engineering or health sciences).
EmSAT Advanced
A tier aimed at students applying to specific university majors that require deeper subject knowledge than Achieve covers, used as an additional placement input by some universities and colleges rather than as a general school-leaving requirement.
Exam pattern
EmSAT Achieve subjects are computer-based and computer-adaptive: the difficulty of later questions adjusts based on how a student answers earlier ones, so no two students necessarily see an identical set of questions.
| Subject | Status for MOE Grade 12 | Typical format |
|---|---|---|
| English | Mandatory | About 110 questions over 135 minutes: grammar, vocabulary, sentence and paragraph structure, reading passages, and a short essay (roughly 200-250 words) |
| Arabic | Mandatory | Computer-adaptive, covering reading, language structure and writing in Arabic |
| Mathematics | Mandatory | Around 40 multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions covering algebra, geometry and statistics |
| Physics | Mandatory | Around 40 multiple-choice questions covering mechanics, waves and optics, thermal physics, electricity and magnetism, and modern physics |
| Chemistry | Optional, by major | Around 40 multiple-choice questions covering matter and its properties, and energy, forces and conservation |
| Biology | Optional, by major | Around 40 multiple-choice questions covering cells and organisms, heredity and genetics, evolution and diversity, and ecology |
| Computer Science | Optional, by major | Around 100 multiple-choice questions, offered in separate versions for Java, C++ or Python |
Each subject is registered and sat separately, and a student only needs to retake the specific subject they want to improve, not the whole set.
Marking and results
Each EmSAT Achieve subject is reported on its own scaled score from roughly 300 to 2000; there is no overall combined score across subjects and no fixed pass or fail mark, since universities set their own minimum scores per programme. For EmSAT English specifically, the scaled score also maps to CEFR proficiency bands:
| EmSAT English score | CEFR level |
|---|---|
| 300-475 | A1 |
| 500-850 | A2 |
| 875-1225 | B1 |
| 1250-1600 | B2 |
| 1625-1975 | C1 |
| 2000 | C2 |
Results are published on the student's EmSAT portal account after the test is marked. EmSAT certificates are generally treated as valid for a limited period (commonly cited as around 18 months from the test date) before a university may ask for a retake.
Important dates
For the 2026 cycle, EmSAT Achieve is offered on a recurring schedule of test dates across the academic year, mostly on Saturdays, with sessions available in both the first and second semesters rather than on a single annual date. Schools also coordinate school-day sittings for their own Grade 12 students. Check the official EmSAT portal for the exact dates and subject-wise registration windows for a given session, since these are published and updated by the Ministry of Education each cycle.
Fees
For 2026, fees depend on the student's category:
| Candidate | Fee |
|---|---|
| Grade 12 MOE-curriculum student, first attempt at a subject | Free |
| Grade 12 MOE-curriculum student, retaking a subject | AED 100 per subject |
| Private candidate (not currently enrolled on the MOE curriculum) | Approximately AED 300-400 per subject |
Fees are paid online through the EmSAT portal at the time of registration.
How to apply
Download the UAE PASS app and activate an account using an Emirates ID (students under the standard age may need a parent or school to assist).
Sign in to the EmSAT portal (emsat.moe.gov.ae) with the UAE PASS account.
Select the test tier (Achieve, for most Grade 12 students) and the subject or subjects to register for.
Choose a test centre and an available date from the open registration window.
Pay the applicable fee, where one applies, and submit the registration.
Bring a valid Emirates ID to the test centre on test day.
After the exam
EmSAT Achieve scores feed directly into university admission in the UAE: public universities and many private ones use the English score (and, for some majors, Math, Physics, Chemistry or Biology scores) to decide direct admission, conditional admission, or placement into a foundation or bridge programme. A commonly cited benchmark is an EmSAT English score of around 1250, which several UAE universities use as the point above which a student can skip foundation-level English courses and enter degree-level study directly; some universities, such as Khalifa University, set a higher English threshold for certain programmes. Students below a university's cutoff are typically placed into foundation or bridge coursework and can retake the relevant EmSAT subject later to try to test out of it.
Preparation tips
Check the specific EmSAT subjects and minimum scores each university and programme you are applying to actually requires, since thresholds differ by institution and by major.
Use the official EmSAT Achieve test specification documents for each subject (published on the EmSAT portal) to see the exact content domains and question types before practising.
Because the test is computer-adaptive, practise full-length timed questions on a computer rather than only on paper, so the pacing and on-screen navigation feel familiar.
For English, practise the essay-writing component separately from the multiple-choice sections, since it is scored differently and often needs the most dedicated practice time.
FAQs
Is EmSAT the same as IELTS or TOEFL?
No. EmSAT is a UAE Ministry of Education test, but UAE universities generally accept an EmSAT English score in place of IELTS or TOEFL for admission purposes, so most students only need to take one of the two.
Can a student outside the UAE school system take EmSAT?
Yes. Private candidates who are not currently enrolled in an MOE-curriculum school can register through the EmSAT portal with a UAE PASS account and sit the test for a fee, generally to meet a UAE university's admission requirement.
Which EmSAT subjects are compulsory?
English, Arabic, Mathematics and Physics are the subjects every Grade 12 student on the MOE curriculum needs to complete. Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science are additional subjects some students take depending on the university programme they are applying to.
What happens if my EmSAT English score is below a university's cutoff?
Most universities place students below their cutoff into a foundation or bridge English programme rather than refusing admission outright. A student can later retake the EmSAT English subject, for a fee, to try to reach the score needed to skip or exit that programme.
