Overview

The Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) is a school mathematics competition created in 2006 and run by SIMCC, a social enterprise based in Singapore. The organisers say that more than 700,000 students from over 10,000 schools have taken part, and that by 2025 it reached more than 50 countries and territories. Its papers mix school mathematics with Olympiad-style problems, and aim to build both school maths and higher-order thinking skills.

Who can take it

SASMO is open to students from Kindergarten 2 to grade 12 (Singapore Primary 1 to 6, Secondary 1 to 4 and Junior College 1 and 2). There are three ways to enter:

  • International candidates register through a SIMCC country partner.

  • Singapore schools register their students through their school.

  • Private candidates register directly through the SIMCC portal.

Syllabus

SIMCC groups the syllabus by level.

  • Grades 1 to 4 (Primary 1 to 4) and grades 5 to 6 (Primary 5 to 6): arithmetic and statistics, geometry and mensuration, word problems solved with the model method or other methods, and non-routine problem solving. The grades 5 to 6 list also allows algebra in word problems.

  • Grade 7 (Secondary 1): arithmetic and algebra, geometry, graphs and mensuration, statistics, and non-routine problem solving.

  • Grade 8 (Secondary 2): the same areas as grade 7, plus Pythagoras' Theorem.

  • Grades 9 to 12 (Secondary 3 and 4, JC 1 and 2): arithmetic and algebra, geometry, graphs and mensuration, Pythagoras' Theorem and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and non-routine problem solving.

Non-routine problem solving includes number patterns, divisibility tests, spatial visualisation, logic problems and cryptarithms.

Marking and results

Awards include Perfect Score, Gold, Silver and Bronze, and e-certificates for Honourable Mention and participation. Perfect scorers receive a personalised medallion and an SGD 100 voucher each, up to SGD 5,000 in total, shared equally if there are more than 50. Gold, Silver and Bronze winners receive medals. A country with 500 or more contestants has award ratios applied separately; a smaller country's students are combined with another country's group, so the stated ratios may not hold exactly.

SASMO 2026 results were released in two batches by country group, plus an overall final result list with the global ranking.

Important dates

Dates are set by category. For 2026:

  • Singapore schools: any day between 9 March and 7 April 2026, chosen by the school.

  • Private candidates: 28 and 29 March 2026.

  • International candidates: set by the country partner.

Dates for the next edition were not published on the pages read for this review.

Fees

For 2026, Singapore schools paid SGD 30 per student, including GST, which includes access to the learning platform with 2023 to 2025 papers and answer keys. Private candidates paid SGD 57, plus 9 percent GST and a 4 percent card-processing fee. International fees are set by the country partner. Fees are not refundable, except when a student is charged wrongly or SIMCC cancels an event.
