Overview
The National Level Science Talent Search Examination (NSTSE) is a diagnostic test organised by the Unified Council for school students across India. Unlike a ranking-only competition, NSTSE is designed to assess conceptual understanding and give each student a detailed performance report, rather than to feed into a further national or international selection pathway.

Who can take part
NSTSE is open to students in Classes 1 to 10, following the CBSE, ICSE/ISC or various state board syllabi.
Exam pattern
| Classes | Questions | Marks | Duration | Subjects |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 40–50 | 40–50 | 60 minutes | General Science, Mathematics |
| 3–5 | 60 | 60 | 60 minutes | Science, Mathematics, Critical Thinking |
| 6–10 | 60 | 60 | 60 minutes | Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Critical Thinking |
All questions are objective (multiple choice), and there is no negative marking.
Syllabus
NSTSE questions are based on the school syllabus for the student's own class and board (CBSE, ICSE/ISC or state boards), rather than a separate olympiad syllabus, since the exam is meant to diagnose how well a student has grasped their regular curriculum.
Important dates
For the 2026-27 cycle, the offline (through-school) exam is scheduled for November 20, 2026 and December 2, 2026, and the online exam for January 24, 2027.
Fees
For individual registration, the fee is Rs. 350, which covers past papers, study guides and postal charges. For registration through a school, the fee is Rs. 150 per student, and an optional Student Performance Report (SPR) costs an additional Rs. 15.
How to register
Students can register individually online at unifiedcouncil.com with online payment, or through their school, which submits consolidated registrations and payment to Unified Council's Hyderabad office.
Results and awards
Merit and participation certificates are awarded based on performance, and the optional Student Performance Report gives each student a detailed, subject-wise breakdown of strengths and weaknesses along with a national-level ranking.
Preparation tips
Because NSTSE tests the regular school syllabus rather than olympiad-level material, revising class textbooks thoroughly and practising with past NSTSE papers (available from Unified Council) is the most direct preparation route.
Does NSTSE lead to a national or international olympiad?
No. NSTSE is a diagnostic, syllabus-based test that gives students a performance report and ranking; it does not feed into a further national or international selection stage.
Is there negative marking in NSTSE?
No, there is no negative marking; all questions are objective (multiple choice).
Can I register for NSTSE without going through my school?
Yes. Students can register individually online at unifiedcouncil.com and pay the individual registration fee directly.
Is the same NSTSE paper used for every class?
No. The number of questions, subjects and format vary by class group (Classes 1–2, 3–5, and 6–10 each have a different structure).
