Overview

The Nepal Mathematical Olympiad (NMO) is the national stage of Nepal's selection pipeline for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The Mathematical Association of Nepal (MAN), a non-profit founded in 2015, is Nepal's official IMO representative and runs the programme.

Who can apply

Students in grades 8 to 12 can register for the first stage, the District Mathematics Olympiad. Another page on the MAN site describes IMO eligibility as being under 20 on 1 July of the IMO year, enrolled in or recently out of high school, and a Nepali citizen.

Levels or stages

District Mathematics Olympiad (DMO)

Held across all 77 districts. The paper has 50 multiple-choice questions in 100 minutes, and a score of 25 or more (50 percent) moves a student ahead.

Provincial Mathematics Olympiad (PMO)

Held across Nepal's seven provinces, with written problems that need full solutions rather than only answers.

National Mathematics Olympiad (NMO)

A two-day national final in Kathmandu with olympiad-style papers. The top 30 candidates go forward.

Team Selection Test and training camp

A residential camp with team selection tests chooses the six-member team for the IMO.

After the exam

The selected team represents Nepal at the IMO. MAN reports one bronze medal and 11 honourable mentions since 2017 across ten IMO delegations.

How to apply

Register through MAN. The MAN office is in Putalisadak, Kathmandu; contact details are on its site. Fees and dates are not on the pages read; check the current announcement.

Is the NMO the first round?

No. The NMO is the third stage, after the district and provincial rounds.
