Overview

The KAPEK Kenya Mathematical Olympiad (KKMO) is an annual mathematics contest for high school students in Kenya, organised by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Nairobi and sponsored by KAPEK Mathematical Instruments. It has run since 2009. Its top finishers get a chance to represent Kenya at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

Who can enter

You choose a category when registering:

  • Junior: the first two years of high school

  • Senior: third year of high school and above

According to the organiser's FAQ, there is no limit to how many students a school can register for the first round.

Levels or stages

The contest has three rounds. In 2022, the 13th edition's first round was held on 31 May. Round 1 is taken at the student's school or another venue chosen by the school. Qualifiers for the second and third rounds sit the exam at the KKMO headquarters at the University of Nairobi. KAPEK mathematical sets are provided to Round 2 participants.

Results and awards

The winners and their schools' mathematics departments receive cash awards from the sponsor. The university's 2022 notice says the top 6 students in the third and final round of the 13th KKMO would have a chance to represent Kenya at the IMO in 2023.

Preparation tips

Practise multi-step problems from past papers published by the organisers.

Note

The round arrangements and school registration limit come from the organiser's FAQ, which could not be opened directly during checking, and the dates come from a 2022 notice. Confirm the current dates, fee and rules with the organisers.
