Overview
The Chinese Mathematical Olympiad (CMO, 全国中学生数学奥林匹克竞赛) is China's national final in mathematics for secondary school students. It is organised by the Chinese Mathematical Society and held with the national winter camp, in late November to December. It follows the format of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and is the key step to the national training team.

Who can take part
Entry is by qualification, not open registration. Reports describe entrants as students who win a top prize in the National High School Mathematics League (see the gaolian programme) and are placed on their province's team, plus members of the previous year's national training team who have not yet finished high school. The top scorers in the China Girls' Mathematical Olympiad are also reported to earn places.
Exam pattern
| Detail | CMO |
|---|---|
| Days | 2 consecutive days |
| Problems | 3 per day, 6 in total |
| Time | 4 hours 30 minutes each day |
| Marks | 21 per problem, 126 in total |

The olympiad is held each year from late November to early December. Confirm the exact dates with the Chinese Mathematical Society and your provincial organiser.
How to apply
There is no direct application. Qualification comes through the National High School Mathematics League and provincial team selection.
Preparation tips
Practise IMO-style proof writing in geometry, number theory, algebra and combinatorics, using past CMO papers.
Can I register for the CMO directly?
No. You qualify through the high school league and your provincial team, or through the national training team or girls' olympiad routes.
