Question 305 marksLong AnswerSection C

(a) A concave mirror of focal length 10 cm can produce a magnified real as well as virtual image of an object placed in front of it. Draw ray diagrams to justify this statement. (b) An object is placed perpendicular to the principal axis of a convex mirror of focal length 10 cm. The distance of the object from the pole of the mirror is 10 cm. Find the position of the image formed.

(b) Given: Focal length of convex mirror = 10 cm, Object distance = 10 cm

To find: Image distance

Using mirror formula: 1/f = 1/do + 1/di

where f = focal length, do = object distance, di = image distance

1/10 = 1/10 + 1/di

1/di = 1/10 - 1/10

1/di = 0

di = infinity

The image is formed at infinity.

Hint

Recall the properties of concave and convex mirrors and how they affect the path of light rays.

Quick oral answer

The concave mirror can produce a magnified real as well as virtual image of an object placed in front of it.

Common mistakes

  1. 1.confusing the properties of concave and convex mirrors

Analysis and explanation

(a) The ray diagrams show that the concave mirror can produce a magnified real as well as virtual image of an object placed in front of it.

(b) The image distance is infinity, which means the image is formed at infinity.

Interesting facts

The focal length of a mirror is the distance between the principal focus and the pole.
