(a) The mirror is a convex mirror. The ray diagram for the observation is shown below:


The convex mirror is used as a rear-view mirror in vehicles because it always gives an erect, though diminished, image. Also, it has a wider field of view as it is curved outwards.


(b) The radius of curvature of a spherical mirror is the radius of the sphere of which the reflecting surface of the mirror forms a part. The focal length of a spherical mirror is half of its radius of curvature. Therefore, the focal length of the given spherical mirror is +12 cm. Since the focal length is positive, the mirror is a convex mirror.
