Question 215 marksLong AnswerSection A

(a) State the laws of refraction of light. Give an expression to relate the absolute refractive index of a medium with speed of light in vacuum. (b) The refractive indices of water and glass with respect to air are 4/3 and 3/2 respectively. If the speed of light in glass is 2×1082 \times 10^8 ms−1ms^{-1}, find the speed of light in (i) air, (ii) water.

Light — Reflection and Refraction
Refraction of Light and Refractive Index

Official answer

(a) Laws of Refraction of Light:

  1. The incident ray, the refracted ray, and the normal to the interface of two transparent media at the point of incidence, all lie in the same plane.
  2. The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction is a constant, for the light of a given colour and for the given pair of media. This is also known as Snell's law of refraction:

sin⁡isin⁡r=constant\frac{\sin i}{\sin r} = \text{constant}

Expression for Absolute Refractive Index:

The absolute refractive index of a medium (nmn_m) is defined as the ratio of the speed of light in vacuum (cc) to the speed of light in that medium (vv):

nm=cvn_m = \frac{c}{v}

(b) Numerical Calculations:

Given:

  • Refractive index of water, nw=43n_w = \frac{4}{3}
  • Refractive index of glass, ng=32n_g = \frac{3}{2}
  • Speed of light in glass, vg=2×108 m s−1v_g = 2 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}

(i) Speed of light in air (vacuum), cc:

Using the relation ng=cvgn_g = \frac{c}{v_g}:

c=ng×vg=32×(2×108 m s−1)=3×108 m s−1c = n_g \times v_g = \frac{3}{2} \times (2 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}) = 3 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}

(ii) Speed of light in water, vwv_w:

Using the relation nw=cvwn_w = \frac{c}{v_w}:

vw=cnw=3×108 m s−143=94×108 m s−1=2.25×108 m s−1v_w = \frac{c}{n_w} = \frac{3 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}}{\frac{4}{3}} = \frac{9}{4} \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1} = 2.25 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}

Marking scheme

  1. 1.Stating the two laws of refraction correctly (2 marks)
  2. 2.Writing the correct formula for absolute refractive index (n=c/vn = c/v) (1 mark)
  3. 3.Correct calculation and unit for speed of light in air (3×108 m s−13 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}) (1 mark)
  4. 4.Correct calculation and unit for speed of light in water (2.25×108 m s−12.25 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}) (1 mark)

Hint

Recall that the absolute refractive index is always calculated with respect to vacuum/air. Use the formula n=cvn = \frac{c}{v} to find the unknown speeds step-by-step.

Quick oral answer

The absolute refractive index of a medium is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in that medium. It has no units because it is a ratio of two identical physical quantities (speeds).

Common mistakes

  1. 1.Inverting the ratio of refractive index (e.g., writing n=v/cn = v/c instead of c/vc/v).
  2. 2.Forgetting to write the units (m s−1\text{m s}^{-1}) in the final numerical answers.
  3. 3.Confusing relative refractive index with absolute refractive index.

Analysis and explanation

The absolute refractive index of a medium is a dimensionless quantity that indicates how much the speed of light reduces when it enters that medium from a vacuum. Since glass has a higher refractive index (1.51.5) than water (1.331.33), light travels slower in glass (2×108 m s−12 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}) than in water (2.25×108 m s−12.25 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1}). This confirms that glass is optically denser than water.

Interesting facts

Light travels at its maximum possible speed of approximately 3×108 m s−13 \times 10^8 \text{ m s}^{-1} only in a vacuum. In any material medium, it interacts with atoms and slows down.
