The amount of this hormone made depends on how efficiently an enzyme (a protein) carries out the process of making it. If the gene for that enzyme makes an efficient form of the enzyme, a large amount of hormone is produced and the plant grows tall. Thus, by controlling the efficiency of the enzyme (protein), the gene ultimately controls the visible trait — tallness or shortness — in the pea plant.
