(a) As stated in the chapter: "a double concave lens... Such lenses diverge light rays... Such lenses are also called diverging lenses." A concave lens is thicker at the edges than at the middle, so a parallel beam incident on it spreads out (diverges) after refraction, appearing to come from the principal focus on the same side as the incident beam.

(b) As per the chapter: "A ray of light passing through a principal focus, after refraction from a convex lens, will emerge parallel to the principal axis."
