Marking Scheme
- 11 mark
Hint
Compare the magnetic field lines of a solenoid with those of a bar magnet.
Quick Oral Answer
A solenoid produces a magnetic field similar to that of a bar magnet because the magnetic field lines of a solenoid are similar to those of a bar magnet.
Analysis & Explanation
The magnetic field lines of a solenoid are similar to those of a bar magnet. The pattern of the magnetic field lines around a current-carrying solenoid is shown in Fig. 12.10. Compare the pattern of the field with the magnetic field around a bar magnet (Fig. 12.4). Do they look similar? Yes, they are similar. In fact, one end of the solenoid behaves as a magnetic north pole, while the other behaves as the south pole.
Common Mistakes
- 1A straight conductor
- 2A circular loop
- 3A circular coil
Interesting Facts
A solenoid can be used to magnetise a piece of magnetic material, like soft iron, when placed inside the coil.
