Variation is crucial for the survival of a species because environmental conditions (niches) can change drastically due to factors beyond the control of organisms, such as global temperature fluctuations, water level variations, or other ecological shifts. If a population of reproducing organisms is perfectly suited to a specific niche and that niche is drastically altered, the entire population could be wiped out. However, if variations are present in a few individuals, they might possess traits that allow them to survive the altered conditions, thereby ensuring the continuation of the species.

Example:

Consider a population of bacteria living in temperate waters. If the water temperature increases significantly due to global warming, most of these bacteria would die. However, a few variant bacteria that are resistant to heat would survive, reproduce, and grow further, preventing the species from going extinct.
