Three metal samples of magnesium, aluminium and iron were taken and rubbed with sand paper. These samples were then put separately in test tubes containing dilute hydrochloric acid. Thermometers were also suspended in each test tube so that their bulbs dipped in the acid. The rate of formation of bubbles was observed. The above activity was repeated with dilute nitric acid and the observations were recorded. Answer the following questions : (a) When activity was done with dilute hydrochloric acid, then in which one of the test tubes was the rate of formation of bubbles the fastest and the thermometer showed the highest temperature ? (b) Which metal did not react with dilute hydrochloric acid ? Give reason. (c) (i) Why is hydrogen gas not evolved when a metal reacts with dilute nitric acid ? Name the ultimate products formed in the reaction. OR (c) (ii) Name the type of reaction on the basis of which reactivity of metals is decided. You have two metals X and Y. How would you decide which is more reactive than the other ?

Official Answer

(a) When the activity was carried out with dilute hydrochloric acid (HClHCl), the rate of formation of bubbles was the fastest and the thermometer showed the highest temperature in the test tube containing magnesium (MgMg).

(b) Copper (CuCu) did not react with dilute hydrochloric acid. This is because copper lies below hydrogen in the reactivity series (Table 3.2). Being less reactive than hydrogen, it cannot displace hydrogen ions from dilute acids like HClHCl to evolve hydrogen gas.

(c) (i) Hydrogen gas (H2H_2) is not evolved when a metal reacts with nitric acid (HNO3HNO_3) because nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent. It immediately oxidises the hydrogen gas produced in the reaction to water (H2OH_2O) and itself gets reduced to any of the nitrogen oxides, such as nitrous oxide (N2ON_2O), nitric oxide (NONO), or nitrogen dioxide (NO2NO_2). The ultimate products formed in this reaction are the metal nitrate salt, water (H2OH_2O), and a nitrogen oxide (such as N2ON_2O, NONO, or NO2NO_2).

OR

(c) (ii) The reactivity of metals is decided on the basis of displacement reactions.

To decide which of the two metals, XX or YY, is more reactive, we can perform a displacement experiment:

  1. Place a clean strip of metal XX into an aqueous salt solution of metal YY.
  2. Place a clean strip of metal YY into an aqueous salt solution of metal XX.

If metal XX is more reactive than metal YY, it will displace YY from its salt solution, resulting in a visible chemical change (such as a color change of the solution or a deposit on the metal strip):

X+Salt solution of YSalt solution of X+YX + \text{Salt solution of } Y \rightarrow \text{Salt solution of } X + Y

If no reaction occurs when metal YY is placed in the salt solution of XX, it confirms that XX is more reactive than YY.

Hint

Recall Activity 3.11 and 3.12. Think about the position of copper relative to hydrogen in the reactivity series, and the strong oxidising property of nitric acid.

Quick Oral Answer

Magnesium reacts fastest with HCl because it is the most reactive among the tested metals (Mg > Al > Zn > Fe). Copper does not react because it lies below hydrogen in the reactivity series and cannot displace it.

Analysis & Explanation

This question tests the understanding of the reactivity of metals with acids and salt solutions based on the reactivity series.

  • Magnesium (MgMg) is highly reactive and reacts vigorously with dilute HClHCl, releasing heat (exothermic reaction) and producing hydrogen bubbles rapidly:

Mg(s)+2HCl(aq)MgCl2(aq)+H2(g)+heatMg(s) + 2HCl(aq) \rightarrow MgCl_2(aq) + H_2(g) + \text{heat}

  • Copper (CuCu) is below hydrogen in the activity series, so it cannot reduce H+H^+ ions to H2H_2 gas.
  • Nitric acid (HNO3HNO_3) acts differently because of its strong oxidising nature. Instead of releasing H2H_2, the hydrogen is oxidised to H2OH_2O. However, very dilute nitric acid can react with magnesium (MgMg) and manganese (MnMn) to evolve hydrogen gas.
  • Displacement reactions provide a definitive method to compare relative reactivities because a more reactive metal will always displace a less reactive metal from its salt solution.

Common Mistakes

  1. 1Stating that copper reacts slowly with dilute HCl (it does not react at all).
  2. 2Forgetting that nitric acid produces water instead of hydrogen gas due to its strong oxidising nature.
  3. 3Not specifying that the displacement reaction requires the metals to be in their salt solution/molten form.

Interesting Facts

Although nitric acid is a strong oxidising agent that typically prevents hydrogen evolution, extremely dilute nitric acid (around 1%) can react with magnesium and manganese to evolve hydrogen gas.
