Explain the events that take place once a sperm reaches the oviduct till it becomes a foetus. Write the role of placenta in pregnancy.
1. Events from Sperm reaching Oviduct to Foetus:
- Fertilisation: The sperm reaches the oviduct (fallopian tube) where it encounters the mature egg cell (ovum). The fusion of the male gamete (sperm) and female gamete (egg) occurs here to form a single-celled diploid zygote.
- Cleavage and Embryo Formation: The zygote begins to divide repeatedly by mitosis as it travels down the oviduct, forming a hollow ball of cells called the embryo.
- Implantation: The embryo reaches the uterus and gets embedded (implanted) in its thick, soft, and highly vascularized inner lining (endometrium).
- Development into Foetus: The implanted embryo continues to grow and differentiate. Cells specialize to form tissues and organs. When the body parts of the developing organism become clearly identifiable, it is called a foetus.
2. Role of the Placenta in Pregnancy:
- Nutrition: It provides a large surface area (via villi) for the transfer of glucose, amino acids, and other essential nutrients from the mother's blood to the developing embryo.
- Respiration: It facilitates the supply of oxygen from the mother to the embryo and the removal of carbon dioxide from the embryo.
- Excretion: It helps in disposing of metabolic nitrogenous wastes generated by the growing embryo by transferring them into the mother's blood stream for excretion.

Trace the journey: fusion in the fallopian tube, division into an embryo, embedding in the uterine wall, and the role of the disc-like connection.
Quick Oral Answer
Fertilisation occurs in the oviduct to form a zygote, which divides to form an embryo. The embryo implants in the uterus and develops into a foetus. The placenta provides oxygen and nutrients to the embryo and removes metabolic wastes.
Analysis & Explanation
Once fertilisation occurs in the oviduct, the zygote must undergo rapid cell division to transition from a single cell to a multicellular embryo. The uterus prepares itself every month to receive this embryo by thickening its lining. The placenta acts as a vital physiological barrier and transport bridge. It contains finger-like villi on the embryonic side, which project into blood spaces on the maternal side, maximizing the surface area for efficient diffusion of nutrients, gases, and metabolic wastes without mixing maternal and fetal blood directly.
Common Mistakes
- 1Stating that fertilisation occurs in the uterus instead of the oviduct (fallopian tube).
- 2Confusing the terms 'embryo' (early stage of development) and 'foetus' (later stage where body parts are recognizable).
- 3Omitting the waste removal function of the placenta, focusing only on nutrient supply.
Interesting Facts
The placenta is a unique temporary organ—it is the only organ in the human body created from two different genomes (partly maternal tissue and partly embryonic tissue) and is discarded after birth!
