Question 193 marksShort AnswerSection A

With the help of a flow chart explain in brief how the sex of a newborn is genetically determined in human beings. Which of the two parents, the mother or the father, is responsible for determination of sex of a child?

Heredity
Sex determination in human beings

Official answer

In human beings, the sex of a newborn is genetically determined by the sex chromosomes.

Which parent is responsible?

The father is responsible for the sex determination of the child. This is because the mother has only X chromosomes (XX) and therefore can give only an X to the child, whereas the father has both X and Y (XY) and can pass either an X (resulting in a girl) or a Y (resulting in a boy). The sex of the baby therefore depends entirely on whether the sperm that fertilises the ovum carries an X or a Y chromosome.

Marking scheme

  1. 1.1 mark: Writing parental genotypes — Mother XX, Father XY.
  2. 2.1 mark: Showing types of gametes and the cross — 1 XX : 1 XY outcome.
  3. 3.1 mark: Concluding that the **father** determines the sex of the child.

Hint

Draw the cross XX (mother) ×\times XY (father) and label the four possible zygotes. Remember only the sperm carries Y, so the father decides.

Quick oral answer

Mother is XX and always passes an X. Father is XY and produces two kinds of sperms (X-bearing and Y-bearing). If a Y-bearing sperm fuses with the ovum, the zygote is XY (boy); if an X-bearing sperm fuses, the zygote is XX (girl). Hence the **father** is responsible for determining the sex of the child.

Common mistakes

  1. 1.Writing that the mother determines the sex — incorrect; she can only give X.
  2. 2.Forgetting that the mother always gives X to the child.
  3. 3.Confusing autosomes with sex chromosomes.

Analysis and explanation

The NCERT text in section 8.2.4 'Sex Determination' clearly explains that women are XX and men are XY. All children inherit an X from their mother; the second sex chromosome is contributed by the father's sperm — X gives a girl, Y gives a boy. Therefore the sex of the child is determined by the father. A simple flow chart summarises the cross XX ×\times XY →\rightarrow 1 XX : 1 XY.

Interesting facts

In some reptiles like crocodiles and turtles, the temperature of the sand where eggs are buried decides the sex — not genetics!

Y chromosome is the smallest human chromosome and carries the SRY gene that triggers male development.

The Y chromosome contains very few genes and does not undergo recombination with X (except at tiny pseudo-autosomal regions).
