(a) The two properties of carbon that lead to a very large number of carbon compounds are:

  1. Catenation: Carbon has the unique ability to form bonds with other atoms of carbon, giving rise to large molecules. This property is called catenation.
  2. Tetravalency: Since carbon has a valency of four, it is capable of bonding with four other atoms of carbon or atoms of some other mono-valent element.

(b) Micelle Formation:

  • In Water: Soap molecules are sodium or potassium salts of long-chain carboxylic acids. They have a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and a hydrophobic (water-fearing) hydrocarbon tail. When added to water, the molecules arrange themselves in a cluster called a micelle, where the hydrophobic tails are tucked into the interior to stay away from water, while the ionic heads face outwards into the water.
  • In Ethanol: Micelles are not formed in ethanol because the hydrophobic hydrocarbon tail of the soap is soluble in ethanol (an organic solvent). Therefore, the molecules do not need to cluster to hide their tails from the solvent.
