What is your impression of Peter?

Peter van Daan initially strikes Anne as a shy, awkward, and rather dull boy — self-conscious, lacking confidence, and uninteresting to talk to. In the early diary entries, she is unimpressed by his quiet, retiring nature and even finds him lazy and a little backward in his studies.

However, as the months of confinement pass, Anne's impression of Peter changes considerably. Confined together in the annexe with few outlets for companionship, the two teenagers begin spending time together, often retreating to the loft to talk in private. Anne discovers that beneath his timidity, Peter is a sensitive, gentle and sincere listener who offers her genuine comfort during moments of loneliness and family conflict. She realises that his shyness is not dullness but a result of insecurity, a lack of self-belief, and insufficient encouragement from his parents.

Their bond deepens into an emotional closeness — almost a first romance — where Peter becomes Anne's confidant and source of support, someone with whom she can share her innermost fears and hopes. Yet Peter remains largely passive, seldom initiating deep conversation himself, relying on Anne's livelier, more articulate nature to draw him out.

Overall, my impression of Peter is that of a good-natured but under-confident boy who is transformed, even if only temporarily, by genuine friendship and understanding — proving that quiet people often have hidden depths waiting to be discovered.
